Social Machines is a rapidly expanding behavioural science consultancy. We specialise in research, innovation and capability development in the fields of strategic behaviour change, online and offline social influence, computational social science, and cyber security. We aim to establish ourself as the pre-eminent leader in our field within five years. Our clients are located in the UK defence and security sector, as well as amongst commercial start-ups and FTSE 100 companies operating in the security and influence sectors.
We are seeking to employ up to three behavioural scientists on a permanent basis. Social Machines is a fully remote working organisation, although travel to client sites within the UK may be required occasionally.

The role:

The successful candidate will apply behavioural science to the support of practical problem-solving tools for our clients. Your role will be to bridge academic research, policy and practice in order to achieve great impact. This will entail a high degree of confidence in your skills, enabling you to interact effectively with different cultures of the private sector, academia, and government. A significant part of this will involve planning projects, reviewing academic papers, applying qualitative methods to collect and analyse data, distilling and summarising findings, communicating with clients, as well as writing research papers and presenting at conferences. Recent projects include:

• A systematic literature review of how gamification can be used to support cyber security for the National Cyber Security Centre;
• Reviews of cyber threat cognition and the psychology of online relationships for a defence-related client;
• Development of a cyber security culture survey
• Strategic behaviour change advice and guidance to a commercial client developing a cyber security application for corporate users.

We offer:

Salary £28,000 – £34,000 pa for behavioural scientists; £35,000 – £48,000 pa for senior behavioural scientists, dependent on skills and experience; an extremely strong emphasis on skills and knowledge development.

Skills we are looking for:


• Hold a bachelor’s degree in psychology or a very closely related subject at a minimum 2:1 or above;
• Hold a master’s degree in a behavioural or social science – or equivalent experience;
• Possess proven excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills;
• A proven commitment to personal and professional development;
• Proven ability to work with resilience under pressure;
• Proficiency in research methods and techniques such as literature review, conducting interviews and workshops;
• Have a strong understanding of theories and practice of influence in online and offline environments;
• Ability to travel occasionally within the UK;
• UK national or UK permanent resident;


• Hold a PhD in a behavioural or social science and/or chartership;
• Advanced skills in qualitative and quantitative methods
• Possess knowledge of cyber security and / or machine learning techniques;
• Experience in the UK defence or security sector;
• Experience of working on complex, interdisciplinary projects requiring engagement with a wide range of different stakeholders.
